Our DUR-PEN Digital handheld Refractometer measures the Specific Gravity (SG) of human urine to determine hydration levels. It is widely accepted as the method of choice for ensuring safe levels are maintained.

This is pen style for ergonomic and hygienic use when testing humans for hydration. It is particularly useful for sports teams and clubs to monitor athletes before, during and after training and matches.

It is also vital for companies employing manual labour in extreme conditions to ensure their workers are properly hydrated thus minimizing the chances of an accident or injury through illness. These can also be used as part of a worksafe OH and S drug testing kit to analyze employees who turn up to work after a big night!  

When a person is not correctly hydrated, the salt balance within the interstitial fluid is disturbed and this changes the normal osmotic state. A reduced osmotic state outside of muscle cells leads to them shrinking and this causes the muscle lumen and sarcoplasmic reticulum to short circuit. The knock-on effect of this can be seen as a muscle cramp or tear. This imbalance can also change the physiological state of the body leading to cardiac impairment.
